The Nevada Independent is facing the same big challenge as lots of other publications in the southwest and in major cities across the country: serving a rapidly growing population that’s been traditionally underserved by media outlets.Jannelle Calderon, who covers Hispanic community and culture for the Independent, says that in Nevada, 30% of the population is Latino and in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas, the school district is half Latino. She thinks about the future of the publication, which launched in 2017, when she talks about those growing demographics.
